Counselling & Psychotherapy: Finding the Right Kind of Support
People come to therapy for different reasons. Sometimes there is a particular challenge they want help navigating; at other times, they want to understand themselves more deeply and explore patterns that have shaped their lives and relationships over time.
At Opalite Counselling, the work begins with understanding you, what has brought you here, and what you hope to gain from the experience. Together, we can consider the kind of support that best fits your needs, goals and circumstances.
Counselling: Support for What You're Facing Now
Counselling often provides a space to work through current difficulties, gain perspective and develop practical ways of responding to life's challenges. This might include anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, significant life changes, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you.
Our work may focus on understanding your experiences, identifying what matters most to you, strengthening coping strategies and exploring new ways to move forward. The pace and focus are guided by your needs, rather than following a predetermined formula.
Psychotherapy: Exploring the Deeper Patterns
Psychotherapy can offer a more sustained space to explore the experiences, emotions and relationship patterns that influence how you understand yourself and engage with the world around you.
This may include reflecting on family-of-origin experiences, longstanding beliefs, recurring relationship difficulties, emotional responses or aspects of your identity that feel difficult to understand or change. The aim is not simply to revisit the past, but to make sense of how earlier experiences may continue to influence the present and to create room for different ways of relating to yourself and others.
Psychotherapy is not reserved for people in crisis. It can also be meaningful for those who want to develop greater self-understanding and make lasting changes in their lives.
A Collaborative Approach
Counselling and psychotherapy are not rigidly separate processes. Practical support and deeper exploration often complement one another, and the work may evolve as your needs change.
My approach is person-centred and integrative, drawing on different therapeutic perspectives and tools according to what is most helpful for you. We will work collaboratively to understand your experiences, identify your goals and find an approach that feels appropriate and meaningful.
You do not need to know in advance which type of support is right for you. We can explore that together.

Couples & Marriage Counselling
Relationships can be a source of great connection, but even loving partnerships can experience conflict, disconnection, and periods of uncertainty. Sometimes the same disagreements repeat, communication breaks down, or partners begin to feel misunderstood or distant.
Couples counselling provides an opportunity to understand the patterns developing between you, communicate more effectively, and work towards greater connection and mutual understanding. Whether you are preparing for marriage, navigating a difficult period, or deciding what comes next, we can explore your relationship together.
Areas of support may include:
- Premarital counselling and preparing for marriage
- Communication and recurring conflict
- Emotional connection and intimacy
- Trust, relationship changes, and rebuilding connection
- Navigating major life transitions together
- Separation, divorce, and changes in family structure
- Preparing for parenthood and the transition to becoming parents

Family Counselling
Family relationships evolve as children grow, circumstances change, and individual needs develop. Parenting can be rewarding and meaningful, but it can also bring uncertainty, disagreement, and unexpected challenges.
My background in marriage and family therapy, combined with extensive parenting-related training, informs my work with family dynamics, parenting approaches, and the ways our own experiences influence how we raise our children.
Areas of support may include:
- Communication and Understanding: Developing healthier ways to express feelings, listen to one another, and navigate disagreements with greater understanding and respect.
- Conflict and Emotional Regulation: Exploring recurring conflicts, sibling disagreements, and parent-child tensions while building skills to manage strong emotions and respond more constructively.
- Boundaries and Family Roles: Establishing healthy boundaries, clarifying family roles and expectations, and understanding patterns that may leave family members feeling overwhelmed, overly responsible, or disconnected.
- Mental Health and Family Wellbeing: Understanding how mental health challenges affect family relationships and exploring ways to offer support, improve communication, and navigate difficulties together.
- Substance Use and Recovery: Understanding how substance use affects the family, developing healthy boundaries, and exploring ways to support recovery without compromising individual wellbeing.
- Life Transitions and Family Changes: Navigating separation, divorce, blended family dynamics, relocation, changes in employment, financial pressures, and other life events that affect family relationships.
- Grief, Loss and Bereavement: Making space for different experiences of grief, supporting one another through loss, and adjusting to life following the death or serious illness of a loved one.
- Trauma and Significant Life Experiences: Exploring how difficult experiences may affect family relationships, including intergenerational patterns, adoption or foster care transitions, and the impact of significant or distressing events.

Preparing for Parenthood
Becoming a parent is one of life's most significant transitions, bringing excitement and anticipation alongside new responsibilities, uncertainties, and changes to your relationship. Although much of the preparation for a baby focuses on practical necessities, preparing for the emotional and relational changes can be just as important.
Pre-parenting counselling offers couples the opportunity to explore what parenthood means to each of them before their first child arrives. Together, we can consider the experiences that have shaped your views of parenting, the values you want to pass on, and how you hope to work as a team when challenges arise.
Areas we may explore include:
- Exploring your individual parenting philosophies and developing a shared approach
- Understanding how your own childhood experiences may influence your parenting
- Discussing discipline, boundaries, expectations, and family values
- Planning for changes in responsibilities, routines, and relationship dynamics
- Navigating differences in parenting expectations
- Considering boundaries with extended family and other influential people
- Protecting your relationship and communication as you adjust to parenthood
- Preparing for disagreements and developing strategies to navigate them together
There is no single right way to become a parent. The goal isn't to agree on everything before your baby arrives, but to develop a stronger understanding of one another and a foundation for making decisions together as your family grows.

Parenting Through Change
Parenting changes as children grow. The approaches that worked during early childhood may need to evolve as children seek greater independence, develop their identities, and begin navigating the world in new ways. These changes can bring opportunities for connection, but they can also create uncertainty and conflict within families.
Parenting support provides space to reflect on your approach, better understand your child's developmental needs, and consider how to maintain connection while adapting boundaries and expectations.
Areas we may explore include:
- Navigating communication challenges between parents and teenagers
- Balancing independence, autonomy, and appropriate boundaries
- Responding to challenging behaviours and recurring conflict
- Developing consistent parenting approaches
- Navigating differences between parents about rules and expectations
- Strengthening parent-child relationships
- Adjusting to changing family roles and developmental milestones
- Supporting children and parents through separation, blended-family changes, or other family transitions
My approach recognises that family relationships are interconnected. By understanding the perspectives, needs, and patterns of interaction within a family, we can work towards changes that support healthier communication and stronger connections.

The meaning behind Opalite
A more intentional way forward.
Opalite is a beautiful, human-made material inspired by the luminous appearance of natural opal. For me, it represents the possibility of consciously shaping how we understand ourselves, relate to others, and move forward in life. While we cannot control every circumstance or change our past, we can develop new perspectives and make intentional choices about what comes next.
Our experiences and relationships shape the patterns we carry into the present. Counselling offers a space to explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion, deepen our understanding, and discover new ways of connecting with ourselves and the people who matter most.
Opalite represents that possibility: not becoming someone else, but finding new ways to grow, connect, and shape what comes next.
Hi, I’m Crystal Jaquette, M.A., LMFT, BACP
I am a US-trained therapist and former AAMFT Approved Supervisor with over 15 years of clinical experience in the mental health and behavioural health field. I bring a broad foundation of clinical knowledge, professional training for others, and practical experience to my work. My goal is to create a collaborative, non-judgemental space where you can explore what is happening in your life, recognise your strengths, and develop the tools to move towards meaningful change.
My Approach to Counselling & Psychotherapy
My practice is grounded in a person-centred philosophy and an integrative approach to therapy. I believe every person, couple, and family is unique, with their own experiences, values, strengths, and goals. Because of this, I do not believe effective counselling should follow a rigid formula.
Instead, I draw on different therapeutic approaches and tools, adapting our work to your individual needs and what you hope to achieve. Our work begins with understanding your perspective and what matters to you. From there, we can explore patterns, build insight, develop practical skills, and identify new ways of responding to life's challenges.
My training includes cognitive behavioural approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), alongside systemic approaches such as structural, strategic, and solution-focused therapy. This combination allows me to consider not only our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, but also the relationships, family dynamics, and life circumstances that shape our experiences.
I also have extensive training in parenting, as well as additional training in substance use assessment and level-of-care placement. These areas of expertise inform my understanding of the challenges individuals and families may face and the different forms of support that may be helpful.
Ultimately, therapy is a collaborative process. You bring your experiences, priorities, and understanding of your own life; I bring clinical knowledge, curiosity, and a commitment to helping you find a way forward that feels meaningful and sustainable.
My Professional Background
I hold a Master of Arts degree in Counselling & Educational Psychology, with a specialisation in Marriage and Family Therapy, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the United States. I relocated to the UK in Spring 2026 and now hold a BACP membership here. I have worked under my US LMFT license in a variety of settings including for US state-funded agencies (similar to charities in UK), outpatient and inpatients settings, private practice, and most recently for the University of Nevada, Reno as Behavioral Health Quality Assurance & Compliance Specialist and upper division instructor for the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT).
How I Can Help
I work with individuals, couples, and families who want to better understand themselves, navigate challenges, strengthen relationships, and make changes that support their wellbeing. Please visit the Services page for more information.
